James Windsor’s Code

When they were children, the kidnapped character, James Windsor, and his sister, Julia, pretended they were the famous detectives, Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson.

They had a secret code to write each other messages that no one else could understand.

Read the rules for James and Julia’s code and look at the example on page 92 of the book.

Think about and find out …..

  • Who was Sherlock Holmes?
  • What is a famous quotation that is still popular that Sherlock Holmes is supposed to have said? (See page 102 of the book for a hint)
  • Did Sherlock Holmes really say this? (Google Sherlock Holmes Quotes to find out)
  • Why do you think Sherlock Holmes’ stories are still being written and movies being made of them? (Ask your parents if they have seen any. Ask them did they see the movie called ‘Sherlock Holmes’ released in 2010 with Robert Downey Jnr and Jude Law?)
  • What is a Code? (Look up a Dictionary to find out!)
  • Have you ever made up a Code?

This Code was successfully diciphered by Philippa T. of St John's Primary School at Woy Woy on the night of 13th August 2010 and she has received a surprise email in return of an unpublished illustration by Illustrator Peter 'Zane' Haywood. Congratulations Philippa (who also bought a book on 13th August)!
But, that is no reason not to try to solve it yourself! And, watch this space and other Coded Message will be listed soon with an email prize to win.
